Their reverse osmosis process is expensive and power hungry ….. there is an alternative, but it would occupy somewhat more space and rely on the sun … solar evaporation/condensation …. as a byproduct the salt could be collected and sold instead of pumping concentrated brine back into the ocean! … a massive solar still - proven technology, “lo-tech”, yes the output volume would vary with the weather …. solar concentrators (mirrors) could enhance the efficiency.
This approach has either been dismissed out of hand or only superficially considered by those in power, but it is a viable approach …. it is a fundamental part of survival training in any arid environment.
Desalination per-se is ok, but the method chosen to implement it must be open to question!
Bill
The alternative to doing nothing and sitting on our hands means that we may well leave any decision making too late to be effective. The earth’s ice is melting rapidly and we worry about costs while politicians spend millions of dollars on useless security for a mythical enemy!…..We need to get our feet firmly back onto the grounds of reality! and our Governments must stop point scoring off each other and actually Govern the resources we still have!
Good point Marywalsh.
Wasn’t APEC disgusting? To think tax payers money was spent protecting that fool Bush.. who wants him here anyway!
I’m not sure how I feel about desalination.. I guess we need to start acting on this water issue. I really wonder though, why it is that racecourses and golfcourses continue to use millions of litres per week if we think we are serious about cutting back on usage. I know we’ve all got to do our bit, but these businesses are just too damn thirsty. I feel for the golf lovers, but horse racing is not personally something I see any great value in, sorry!
Plus the horses have equine flu now to be concerned about, maybe its time to pull the plug on racing?
Seems like it just generates alot of money for very few people anyhow… think of all the money folks would save on expensive outfits and the indulgence of racing events.
I value the priorites of water saving far more than fancy smancies who want to go to race day. Get over yourselves I say - betting on the fastest horse! What do the horses get out of it really?
Back to desalination anyhow! ….
but if it doesnt rain where will we get water from. it doesnt grow on trees. i think desalination is a good idea.
i feel sorry for those poor horses but im a nurse not a vet.
There is one solution that will solve two problems, Geo thermal power. Exploration is currently going on in the area for a geo thermal power station, that could use sea or underground water for steam production, and supply clean drinking water while producing the power to do it and to add in to the main grid. QED But it needs private money invested because the Fed and State pollies are so damned ignorant!!!!!!!
I think grumps has the right idea
